As we head through Spring into Summer here in London the longer, lighter days are very welcome. While an anticipated uplift in Post Production / VFX work still seems to be a couple of months away, we are starting to see some signs that Studios are gearing up for a busier Summer / Autumn ‘24 after an incredibly lean post strike period.
While we are still seeing layoffs, demand for studio production time and space has been steadily growing once again, although It may be some time before we see this translate to a significant increase in employment numbers in VFX / Post Production to anything like Q1 ‘23 levels.
Similar sentiment is also being expressed in the Games industry, with layoffs still impacting many but some studios actively hiring.
The current situation of course means that competition for roles will be tough.
Be sure to take time to focus on your CV and showreel or portfolio to make the best possible first impression. When Recruiters receive high numbers of applications, the first 30 seconds to 1 minute they take to review can be key to progression with an application process.
As we navigate this incredibly tricky period, it’s important to ensure that collectively we are sharing as many opportunities as we can. DAX will continue to post vacancies and support the community with as much information as possible – see links further down this post..
More importantly, we know the impact the current situation can have on people’s well being.
Be sure to check in with friends and colleagues to see how they’re doing. If you are feeling the impact and uncertainty brought about by the current situation, do not be afraid to talk about it – you are not alone.
If you or someone you know is may need help, here are links to organisations offering support in the UK:
Civil War – 7.6 IMDB In Cinemas
Alex Garland’s near future journey across a USA fractured by civil conflict saw a strong opening weekend in the US / Domestic and UK/Ireland box office.
Embedded with war photographers as they head to Washington DC, the pace and tension builds and blends with high impact, dynamic combat sequences. Rob Hardy’s outstanding cinematography and VFX from Framestore and TPO VFX make this one well worth checking out on IMAX if you can.
Fallout – 93% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – Amazon Prime
Full confession, I’ve never played Fallout. That said, Jonathan Nolan’s adaptation of Bethesda Studio’s hugely popular franchise has proven a hit with seasoned gamers and us noobs alike.
Combining vivid colour with a bleak post apocalyptic world, we journey the wasteland with survivors who each have their own story to tell. Expect to meet mutant bugs, ghouls and no end of parched, grimy characters. Scorched environments, grizzly creatures and some pretty epic gore are brilliantly realised courtesy of a number of VFX houses including Rise, Framestore, ILP, Refuge VFX, One of Us, Mavericks, CoSA FX and Pinscreen.
If this is the end of the world, count me in…
3 Body Problem 80% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – Netflix
David Benioff and DB Weiss’ adaptation of Liu Cixin’s 2008 sci-fi tale sees us traversing time and space as our protagonists try to unravel the mysterious deaths of scientists and their connection to an unnerving countdown.
This may feel like a slow burn to start with but there are dramatic twists aplenty and Benioff and Weiss’ once again prove that no one is safe..
Cosmic and earthly environments and characters and some pretty spectacular destruction is brought to you by the teams at Scanline, Pixomondo, BUF, SSVFX, ElRanchito and Image Engine.
